College Dorm Room Essentials

For those of you who are about to start your college careers, it can be scary and overwhelming. For most first-year students, they will live in a college dormitory for their first year. During my first year, I lived in a dorm as well and realized that there were some essentials that I needed to thrive in such a small space. I started with some essentials like a microwave and a mini fridge, but as the year went by, I realized that I needed much more and could do without some of the stuff I thought I needed. I’ve narrowed my list down to the essentials and I’m here to share them with you!

1. A Mini Fridge

Where else are you going to keep all the groceries you buy? Not to mention, this one has a freezer too (great place to keep ice cream for those long nights). Take a closer look at the one listed above here!

2. A Microwave

It’s no doubt that you will have late nights and need a late night snack. This is perfect for heating up left-overs or making instant mac-and-cheese. The one listed above is a “best seller” on Check it out here!

3. A Full Length Mirror

Save yourself a trip to the bathroom and get your own mirror in your room. This one is perfect because it hangs over the door and saves you floor space. A great way to make sure you are look 100% for class.

4. A Sturdy Laundry Hamper

A sturdy laundry hamper is a MUST HAVE when living in a college dorm. Chances are, you’ll have to drag your laundry from your dorm room to the first floor or basement of your dormitory building. For this reason alone, you need a laundry hamper that is not only large, but can withstand you dragging it around the building. This laundry hamper is both those things!

5. A Set of Velvet Hangers

You will need hangers when hanging your nice sweaters or jackets in your closet. Dorm closets can be very small and and regular hangers can take up unnecessary space. Using velvet hangers not only ensures that your clothes don’t slip off the hanger itself, but also saves a significant amount of room in your closet (which means more clothes)!

6. A Shower Caddy

A shower caddy is essential if you do not have your own private bathroom. This shower caddy is mesh, so it is breathable and no gross mold or mildew will grow. Additionally, it has lots of pockets to hold your bathroom essentials and a key ring to hang a key on (if you need it).

7. A Hanging Shoe Organizer

When I was moving into my dorm room in my first year of college, I was faced with the challenge of where to store my shoes. I have at least ten pairs of shoes and I didn’t want to store them under my bed because they took up so much room. Once I got this shoe organizer, I was so relieved. Not only did it clear up floor space, it also made it easier to find and pick out the shoes that I wanted to wear for the day.

8. A Reliable Printer

During college, you spend most of your time on your laptop/computer whether it be taking notes, studying, or doing assignments. What people underestimate is how much they have to print out papers during college. Some people prefer to print out notes beforehand or worksheets to help study for exams. Over time, printing fees can get expensive. Invest in your own printer to keep in your dorm room to save time and fees while running to the library.

9. A Warm Comforter

During the winter months, dorm rooms can get chilly. It’s important to have a warm comforter that can insulate your body heat and is great to snuggle in. This will be your new best friend.

10. A Water Pitcher

Save yourself a trip back and forth from the water fountain and get a water pitcher. You can fill it with tap water, it will filter out all the germs, and voila! Fresh water right in your dorm room.

11. A Mattress Topper

Dorm room mattresses can be hard and uncomfortable. It’s no doubt that the key to a good night’s sleep is a good mattress to lay on. A simple, and cheap, solution is to purchase a mattress topper. You’ll be thankful you did.

12. A Whiteboard Calendar

I never knew how much I needed this until I had one of my own. It makes it so easy for me to keep track of my assignments and exams and to plan ahead.

Do you have any college essentials of your own that I may have missed? If so, share them with me in the comments!

  1. The item that I would recommend the most is definitely a full length mirror. I find it so incredibly handy. A warm comforter is also a definite must, plus an electric blanket if you are allowed one
